Genoa’s home defeat to Barcelona means the latter can still qualify for the Cup if they beat Juventus in the final group game next week, and Genoa lose at Benfica. Even then, it would be decided on goal difference.

Meanwhile the group’s top scorers, Gabriel Barbosa (7 goals) and Ante Coric (6), face off against the group’s two best goalkeepers, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic (3 clean sheets) and Alex Meret (5).

Atletico’s win at Arsenal guarantees them a place in the Cup knockout draw. It also means Arsenal can now book their place only if they win at group winners Dortmund in their final game, and Real Madrid fail to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

A draw would be good enough for Real if Arsenal lose or draw in Dortmund, and Chelsea could still sneak through with a win if Dortmund don’t lose! Simples!

Flamengo secured their place in the Cup knockouts after Leverkusen’s youth team failed to show – no doubt still celebrating their own success from the previous week.

Marseille and Hoffenheim will play in the Shield, while joining them will be Independiente if they can match Valencia’s result or better in the final game. Even if they don’t, I’m still inclined to exclude Valencia, on the grounds that they gave forfeited FIVE matches out of nine so far.

Three draws in the ‘Group of Death’, also the only group with no forfeited games!

Unbeaten Sporting are strong favourites to win the group and progress into the Cup knockouts, provided they can avoid defeat at home to bottom club Liverpool in their final game. They could still qualify for the Cup if they lose, but then they would depend on Newcastle beating Manchester City, and goal difference. If they lose, of course, Manchester City or Newcastle could still overtake them…
Sevilla, meanwhile, will need to beat Espanyol to slip past the losers of the City vs. Newcastle game, if they want to defend their Shield title. Again, it could come down to goal difference.

Fiorentina and Augsburg were the only teams to turn up this week in Group G and they will face each other in their final game next week. Both teams still have a chance of overhauling Hertha Berlin to claim the solitary Shield qualifying place. If Berlin fail to win, Augsburg will take their place if they can win at home against Fiorentina. A draw for Fiore would be enough if Berlin lose, while a win by two goals more than a Berlin win against Shakhtar would also see La Viola snatch second place.

Lokomotiv’s failure to select their team leaves them needing to win at group winners Celta Vigo in their final game to have any hope of qualifying for the Spoon knockout stage. A draw at home to bottom club Leicester will likely be enough for them.
Palace’s defeat at home to Sao Paulo means they are out.  A draw for the latter in their final game against third placed Cologne will be enough to see them avoid the Spoon knockouts (for now, at least), whereas Cologne must win to do likewise.
