When the dust settled, the field was significantly thinner, and the paths to both the Youth Cup and Youth Shield glory have become clearer. Here’s the full story of a wild weekend of knockout football.

The Extra-Time Epics: Dortmund & São Paulo Triumph in Thrillers

Two of the round's most anticipated clashes went the distance, requiring fictional extra time to find a winner. In a heavyweight battle, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund played out a fantastic 2-2 draw in normal time. The back-and-forth affair continued into the extra period, where Dortmund ultimately found the edge, emerging with a stunning 4-3 victory to knock out the Red Devils.

As a result, all four teams have been removed from the competition entirely.

Furthermore, while Levante UD were initially defeated 5-2 by Dynamo Moskva, the result was overturned. Dynamo were found to have fielded their senior team and were subsequently disqualified. The official result is a 3-0 forfeit win for Levante, and Dynamo Moskva have also been removed from all competitions.

After a chaotic first round, just 14 teams remain in the hunt for the S25 Youth Cup. These teams will advance to the second knockout round. There will be two byes as a result of the failure of other managers to play their games.

Youth Cup Knockout Stage: Qualification Explained

In my previous update I said that the top two in each group qualify for the knockout stages, which is true.

What I forgot is that we need 32 teams in the 1st Round, so that means the eight best third placed teams also qualify.

The best eight third placed teams are: SL Benfica Dynamo Moskva, Sampdoria, AC Milan, CA Independiente II, Stoke City, FC Schalke 04 and RSC Anderlecht.

Everyone else (bar Inter and Chievo who each forfeited three group games) drops into the Youth Shield.

It seems simple squad selection errors were likely to blame – managers forgetting the crucial step of swapping senior players out for their designated youth cup squads! An easy mistake to make, but a costly one!

The Battle in Barcelona!

For the third season in a row, Leicester City were preparing for a Youth Final. Last season the Youth Cup, and the season before the Youth Shield. Both times the fans had walked away happy, their team named as Champion, and they were hoping to do so once again.
The route to the final and the clubs history here had given the fans a lot to be happy about. 12 wins, 0 losses. 44 goals scored, 7 conceded. 3 previous finals, 3 trophies.
Division 1 giants Bayern München, Barcelona and Chelsea had all been faced and beaten.
Next up, Earle's former club, RCD Espanyol.

Fans, players and pundits will all disagree on whether it is better to host the opening leg or host the second leg. Hosting the opener gives you the opportunity to build a lead to take with you on the road, but hosting the second leg allows you to, potentially, celebrate with the trophy at home in front of your own fans.
In either case, the away leg can be tough, in a hostile environment and an unknown stadium and city,
For Earle this was not a problem, as he is still welcomed back to RCD Espanyol by the club president and the fans due to the immense impact he had on the club when he arrived with them whilst in Division 5, setting in motion the forces which would take them to Division 1!

Saturday 15th March - Leg 1

The buzz around the King Power Stadium started early, with English and Spanish fans descending on the local pubs in preparation for the match. Spirits were high as the fan bases drank together, until one Englishman insulted a Spanish counterpart by referring to Madri as a "good traditional Spanish beer". A Leicester City representative confirmed that the fan had since apologised and had perhaps had one too many to drink, he acknowledged that Madri is just a jumped up Carling, and meant no disrespect to the Spanish fans.

With the mid day antics out of the way, attention turned to the stadium with the fans and media arriving.
Both teams had experience in Youth Finals, Leicester City hoping to make it 4 trophies from 4 finals, and RCD Espanyol hoping to make it 1 trophy from 4 finals, and perhaps that played a role in the early unfolding of the game.

Kick Off - after all the build up and the hype the game got underway with the result anyone's to call. That was for the first 5 minutes at least, and then a quick snappy move from Tel opened up the defence. The Frenchman set up Musiala who finished tidily to make it 1-0 in the 6th minute, with the nerves of Espanyol showing.
Following the quick start the game settled with even possession and chances, and the half ended at 1-0.

Espanyol made a change, taking off new signing Endrick for Buonanotte. The swap paid off, with the substitute levelling play in the 54th minute to liven up the away supporters. But in the midst's of their celebrations the cameras caught a quick whisper from Wirtz to Musiala, Musiala glanced at the the defender which Wirtz pointed at and gave his captain a nod. After the long 3 minutes of Spanish celebrations subsided, the game got back underway, Musiala blazed past his marker immediately, got the ball from midfield and fed Wirtz who put the ball in the net just seconds after kick off. Now it was Leicester's turn to celebrate, as the Espanyol side-line sat silent and dejected. Hope still remained though, with the game only at 2-1 it was still all on the line. But within 5 minutes the lead was doubled as Bergvall scored from outside of the box. Despite some good efforts the game ended 3-1. A solid lead, but not secure enough to be confident that the trophy was won for Leicester.

"There is still a lot to do, we have the lead, but anyone can overturn a 2 goal lead. Especially with the players they have and us being away next. Their fans will be backing them, and they will want revenge. The stats were even and today could have gone either way. I am looking forward to going to Barcelona for the next leg." The president and I are on great terms and he has invited me for dinner on Friday!"

The In-Between - 16th - 21st

With the first leg done, both teams turned their focus to the "final". That focus was distracted though. Espanyol had the Derbi Barceloni to play in the league on Sunday.
Leicester had different inconveniences to face, with away matches at Sporting in Portugal and Leverkusen in Germany ahead of the youth game, meaning there was very little time in Leicester in the week.

Both teams also made their intentions clear for the final making key additions to their youth ranks to bolster their chances. Leicester added long term target Pablo Gavi from Juventus, who came in to bolster the midfield for the last game, ahead of replacing Musiala on the wing next season. Espanyol went further though, bringing in a trio of midfielders. Marc Casado came in from Valencia in a trade, and Do-Young Yun returned for a fee of £234,200,000. They also made a blockbuster deal to bring in Pedri as a possible game changer for the final. Already 22, Pedri would only have 1 opportunity to write his name in the history books and help Espanyol win for the first time!

Saturday 22nd March

Similarly to the week prior, the day started early for players, media and fans alike. Home and away fans once again ate and drank together ahead of the game. The atmosphere was excited but friendly, until another mishap. A Leicester City fan had gone to a popular tapas restaurant, and asked for their famous local pizza. When he was corrected that the restaurant sold Spanish Tapas, he confidently explained that he wasn't stupid, and knew that Pizza was from Spain and so they should sell it there. Upon being kicked out of the restaurant it was discovered that he was the same fan who had caused issues the week before. Leicester City have since confirmed that the fans ticket was suspended and he was sent home to avoid any further issues. He was quoted saying "I didn't want any of that food anyway! I prefer proper good farm food, and I have seen some reports that there are a couple of good farmers to be found in Spain! And if it's on the interweb then it must be true!"

At the RCDE Stadium, Earle had arrived early to visit the staff and groundsmen who he had worked with before, and was greeted by a crowd of fans still grateful for his stint with the club which started over 9 years ago.
The stadium was much unchanged from his departure, but the glamour of reaching Division 1 was evident there.
The changing rooms that slight bit fancier, the ground had a slight bit more capacity, the pitch better kept. The trophy room sat with 3 "Youth Cup Final Participant" badges, and a 4th spot ready for another runners up medal, or maybe finally the Cup itself. But not the Shield, that tournament is considered a "losers competition". A statement which has caused confusion amongst some fans who have noted their lack of any youth trophy at all. But that could all change today!

Ahead of the game, Earle met with the media
"We are not looking to sit on our lead. We have won every game so far, and we intend to win this one too. I have a lot of love for Espanyol and the fans, but today that is put to one side. To see 2 teams which I managed from Division 5 upwards now meet in the Youth Cup Final is superb, and even now I am shown the appreciation from the fans and president that they wouldn't be here without the foundations laid down all those years ago in the toughest days the club faced, and carried on by the following managers and of course Glen now. But as I say, today that doesn't matter. As my counterpart said previously, 'no one remembers the losers', and I do not intend to be the loser today."

The teams were on the pitch, the stadium loud, and the excitement high to see the new Spanish signings of Pedri, Gavi and Casado.
A banner waved in the Espanyol stand "Earle - El regreso del salvador".
Another nearby hung over the rails "¡No puedes detener a Pedri!".
The dreams of the Espanyol faithful lay in the hands of an extremely talented squad, but even more so in their new star boy, Pedri! Signed to save the day, signed to create history! He would make the headlines tomorrow, that much the Spanish fans knew.
Leicester fans thought otherwise, between them, Wirtz and Musiala had combined for 29 goals and 28 assists so far, surely that wasn't going to stop now, and a 2 goal advantage the confidence was high. It was easy to tell which set of fans were making more noise, as chants in English rang around the stadium.

Kick Off - With the lead in hand Leicester started mor confidently, they kept the ball and took their time. A fancy move in midfield by Chaibi led to a late tackle by Pedri, earning him a yellow card early. The game remained stable with Leicester controlling possession. And then came the break, a quick run up the wing by Musiala caught the defence by surprise, Wirtz darted to the near post, tailed by defenders Martinez, Debast and Diouf, only to see the ball sail over all of their heads to the wide open Tel who finished with ease. After the celebrations, the players were headed back for kick off when there was a quick flash and Chaibi went down. No one saw why so VAR was was checked. In frustration at dropping to a 3 goal deficit, and having so little possession, Pedri had continued his earlier scuffle with Chaibi and elbowed him as he passed. With no choice, the ref issued a straight red card and Pedri shuffled off with tears to the boos of both the Espanyol and Leicester fans. Both sets of staff shook their heads as the superstar headed down the tunnel. So Espanyol fans were right, Pedri did make the headlines. A red card within 20 minutes of the Youth Cup final.
Down to 10 men and facing an attacking onslaught, Espanyol held on. But in the 42nd minute, Wirtz was brought down in the box for a penalty, which he tucked away with confidence. Half time saw the score at 2-0, with Espanyol failing to get a shot on target.

No changes came at half time, but like the first leg, Espanyol bounced back quickly, scoring in the 47th minute to restore some hope to the fans. But once again the excitement was short lived. Wirtz was taken down in the box for a second time, and put the penalty away as easily as his first. With that, Espanyol were done, they mustered no more shots on target for the remainder of the game. But Leicester weren't done, especially Tel. With assists from Musiala and Wirtz in the 72nd and 81st minutes the Frenchman wrapped up a superb Cup Final Hattrick, sealing an aggregate 8-2 win for Leicester.

The stadium remained full for the trophy ceremony. Espanyol collected their runners up medals as the fans chanted "at least it's not the shield! at least it's not the shield!"

Leicester raised the trophy to a full stadium, making it 2 Youth Cups back to back, 3 Youth Trophies back to back, and 4 youth Trophies in total.

"It was a great tournament for us, and a great tournament for Espanyol too. Unfortunately, todays game got away from them thanks to an early red card, and 2 clumsy penalties. I think we had it in the bag anyway, but it would be have been good to see the 2 teams go at it 11v11. Hopefully next season the opportunity presents itself once again as they are rapidly improving under Glen. But today is about Leicester and the players, Wirtz and Musiala have been immense this tournament, but Tel showed us his quality today as one of the best out there. Something he has shown in the first team too!
I would also like to pass on my congratulations to Flamengo for a great win in the Youth Shield. It is a massive achievement and Flamengo are becoming synonymous with trophies."

Wirtz ended the tournament with 22 goals and 11 assists, earning him the golden boot. Musiala chipped in with 9 goals of his own and 20 assists, taking home the Playmaker of the Tournament award.
Tel took home the match ball from the final after his electric hattrick.

And now the eyes are on next season, where Leicester City lose some key players.
Musiala and Chaibi are now ineligible, Colwill and Tel depart for Juventus and Ozcan joins Genoa. The moves leave some big holes to be filled but the like of Gavi, Nwaneri and Kwambwala will be looked to to step up and help the team continue in winning form.

But there are others who are ever improving. Barcelona are ever a threat as long as Lamine Yamal remains, and Juventus look reborn in the youth department with multiple new additions. Espanyol remain a threat with up and coming youngsters, and Flamengo will be looking to build on their Shield win. Spectators and pundits will also look on with excitement to see if Youth Cup legends Levante will re-enter next season after a hiatus this year.

Congratulations to Milan and manager Andrew, who beat a very unlucky Benfica in the closest final we've ever seen in Top 100 history.

Both legs finished 2-1 to the home side, meaning the scores were still level after taking into account away goals, so the match was decided in controversial fashion with the long-standing, much maligned and much misunderstood and exclusive to Top 100 rule Fictional Extra Time.

There were some good teams in the Shield this season, so it was very competitive throughout.

Espanyols youth cup game has been left in chaos today after the team bus was attacked on route by a barrage of "Frey Bentos" pies.

The coach stopped at the services but when the players returned to it after their breakfast, the windows had been put through.

Youth team captain Broja said....

"its been crazy, the police have been looking for the culprits, but have found a few clues. These seem to be not the brightest criminals with one of them leaving what appears to be their tactics on one of the seats, its certainly narrowed it down"

Kalimuendo added

"We saw them spin away in the getaway vehicle, there was two guys with greasy mops. It had a "jim il fix for you" badge hanging from the internal mirror, and a Rolf Harris bumper sticker, i'm not an expert, but it suggest there is some fixation with kids about these two."

A club statement put out this morning states.

"We are sad to report we have been ambushed on our way back from our training camp in Portugal, this has put our match at risk tonight with Ajax, in which we are pulling out all the stops to get the game on. We have put out a detailed photofit of the two clowns responsible and applaud anyone with any further information on these two to come forward and pass this on to the TOP100 admin mafia"

Espanyol take a surprise narrow advantage into the second leg of the youth cup semi finals as tonight they beat an excellent Leicester side 3-2 in an end to end tie. Leicester twice took the lead in the fixture, but Espanyol came fighting back as goals from Stiller, Leonardo and Mukhin sent the home fans home dreaming.

Speaking to the media after the game

You have a real chance, how are you feeling?

"Its been an incredible journey and we are still in the tie, I can ask for no more. We had to dig in despite going behind twice, their keeper has also had a blinder so if anything it would of been nice to convert another one of our chances, but still its a great result for us"

How strong are Leicester, can you progress?

Leicester, here we have a team expertly put together by a really top manager. He has brought the team up through the divisions through some excellent scouting and transfer negotiations. He is currently top of division two, but has throughout his time ensured he has looked after his youth team to compliment his first team. He has shown exactly how it should be done, to compete on all fronts. They are still slight favourites with the home tie to come, but I genuinely hope if he progresses, he is rewarded with the trophy at the end."

The other tie has seen Levante beat Barcelona 2-0, two strong sides, your thoughts?

"Firstly we need to take one game at a time, this tie is nicely poised and both Leicester and us know its just half-time here.

The other tie is interesting for the wrong reasons to be honest. Barcelona of course is the team i'd personally like to progress, as I strongly believe we should not be rewarding teams who have clearly manipulated the contract loup holes.

A free season pass for winning this competition could see Levante rewarded for possible back to back relegations with another free season in Division 3, which would again allow them to not take the league competition seriously, making the whole thing a farce.
As Barcelona and Leicester have shown in this seasons competition, you can still be successful in the league and service the first team.
Its no major feat or achievement to sell all your high rated players and assets for youth players. Anyone could do it, and very quickly amass a youth team that is significantly stronger than most of the rest.
I'm sure if I chose to swap all my best players for the top youth , i'd have a bigger chance of winning the youth cup. We've shown this season that we can build first team, youth team and the next youth team. This is a controversial view for some, but my conscience is clear.

If we are rewarding teams/managers who suffer back to back relegations then what is the point of contracts and what message are we setting?

Of course Levante may stop up, may not win the youth cup, but I trully hope if a panel decision is needed, that those appointed to make this decision look past squad assembly and look at the picture which saw players like Ben White swapped for Jobi Bellingham. Look at during Levante's relegation season last season, how the manager deliberately left his best players out in league games to ensure he went down, to try and manipulate an easy contract. It back fired though, he didnt win the youth cup, didnt get his get of jail card and as each game ticks off in the league, gets closer to taking his side from Div 1 to 3 in 2 seasons. A side i may add that didnt need open heart surgery after the great job Dario the previous manager did in building up nice assets.

This of course is my opinion which i'm entitled to have, and hopefully it becomes irrelevant as one of the other three teams in the competition who aint manipulated the rules knock him out as a victory for the other 99 game World managers who play the game in the right spirit, where the league actually matters"

Espanyol will to battle with Leicester on Saturday night in the youth cup semi final first leg, looking to defy the odds and cause an upset.

Leicester have put together a formidable youth team with a number already part of the first team set up.

In their midfield is former Espanyol young star Caicedo who was key to the spanish sides run to the semi finals, whilst Martinelli in attack is a major danger.

Espanyol's own youth team has been strengthened this week as Hickey completed his move from Feyenoord and will make his debut at Full back.

Espanyol's strength this season has been their ability to switch around their formation due to the flexibility in the squad. Despite being lower rated, the spanish side have their own danger men with Leonardo, Henrique and Balogun all capable of being match winners.

We've lost Caicedo and Alberto from the side that was doing so well in the early stages. They were big players for us, and will be missed as we look to get something in the first leg to keep us in the tie.

Leicester will start favourites and the pressure is on them to get the job done, however i have big belief in this crop of youngsters and we wont go down without a fight. We have a game plan for the two legs and hopefully this will catch Leicester by surprise when the game comes around. We are gonna enjoy the experience, as mentioned previously we have exceeded expectations and this squad owes us nothing in this competition. We are having a good season, and still going strong on three fronts. The future is very bright for Espanyol, and this seasons youth cup has seen some great line ups. Over in the other semi final in Barcelona and Levante we have two impressive squads. Who ever comes out on top over the next few weeks will have earnt that trophy as the competition is hot.

The format for the S19 Youth Cup can now be confirmed.

Due to incredible levels of interest we can confirm exclusively that the competition will move from 48 teams to 56!

There will be 14 groups of 4 teams. Each team playing 6 matches as usual.

The movement into the next stages though will change slightly. See below - it makes sense to me which is most important. :)

if I get 4 more teams I will create a 15th group - but they need to apply via blog!

So the teams and the draw - the draw will hopefully be done some time this week - perhaps tomorrow. The pots are not definite yet and will be confirmed officially over next 24 hours.

What I would like to see is this Wednesday and next Saturday that everyone organizes some youth friendlies against similarly rated opponents.

The most successful manager in YC history - Alex Mclean will be delighted with the draw - although no doubt wary of Ruts Benfica - with GinoBet predicting one of Benfica or Man City to make the final. In the bottom half of the draw - Dan Payne and Dario Savinao will be leased that they wont be scheduled to meet until the semi finals as well if everyone progresses.

In round 1 a few former winners face off - with Stephen Partington's Roma facing the inconsistent Youth Side of Dan Wallace - the winner of whom will fancy their chances away in Sevilla and facing Gordon. The first ever winner of the YC - Doc will be in the YC knock outs for the first time in a long time but will face Sampdoria.

Youth Shield

The losers of Youth Cup round 1 drop into Youth Shield Round 2 and the likes of Gursi (Cologne), James Mckenzie (Chelsea) - defending YC manager Heath Brown (Arsenal) and Walter Gogh (Partizan) will all be hoping for easy rides. In round 1 of the YC - Jay Jones has done very well to make the knockouts and will be delighted to be rewarded with a home tie, likewise David Inglis at Zagreb. Last seasons Youth Shield semi-finalist Ignazio Barraco will wary of a nicely developing Independiente side in Round 1 though.

Obafemi before the final

A fantastic hard fought 0 - 2 nil scoreline, Obafemi (2) against Manchester City and Alex McLeans formidable side and holders of the Youth Cup, ensured that we took the cup back to the Emirates, late last night, for the first time, four goals to zero over the two legs.

A big thank you to Stephen and the organisers of this fantastic competition.

After reaching the final, i looked back over the season and reflected on some great performances, either way i was going to post my efforts on Top 100, so writing this means an awful lot to me, a semi final win against Leicester , quarter final against Juventus, what a great ride it has been.

We have arrived at the end of another exciting group stage of Youth Cup football!

Of the 48 entries all teams that finished 1st - 3rd have advanced and will have some shot at glory. Firstly the groups - Outstanding group stages from Hamburg, Juventus, PSV and Galatasaray. Group 11 looked the tightest and Aston Villa can consider themselves very unlucky as they go out on goal difference! '

Above is how the groups then worked out. We will now break off into the Youth Cup and Youth Shield. Remember there are free agent prizes for this as well!

Those in green were the TOP 8 group winners. They will advance directly to Youth Cup round 2. They will have a home draw in a 1 legged knock out tie.

Those in red were the runners up PLUS the 4 weakest group winners. They will go to Youth Cup round one. The draw will ensure the group winners get a HOME TIE - with the runners up not seeded in any way. The winners will advance to Youth Cup Round 2 with an away tie - the losers will advance to Youth Shield round two and will have a HOME tie there.

Those in BLUE advance directly to Youth Shield Round 2 - but will have an away tie v the losers of the Youth Cup Round 1 matches. Those in YELLOW will go into Youth Shield Round 1 - an open draw with the winners advancing to an AWAY tie in Youth Shield Round 2.

Juventus beat Atletico Madrid over two legs (0-2 and 0-0) to become the first team to win a hattrick of Youth Cups. (4-0 wasn't the score, it just means they won all four of their knockout stage matches).

Benfica beat D5 Olympiacos 5-2 over two legs (2-2 and 0-3) to become the first club to win the Shield twice, with manager ruts66 .. notching a record third triumph in the competition (once each with Bayern, Stoke and now Benfica).

New Free Agent Prize Draw

All non-final winning managers who made it through all the group stage and knockout games without forfeiting any matches (for fielding overage players or failing to organise a fixture) are entered into a draw to select one manager as the winner of a 'wild card' prize to choose a new free agent during the month of April 2021 (see rules blow).

Tournament will start on Saturday 21 November 2020, and end on Saturday 13 March 2021 (17 weeks).

Players who were 21 or under at 31 October 2020 are eligible to play, as are players who turned 22 on or after 1 November 2020.

Format

Teams will play in a seeded regional Group Stage consisting of 9 groups A to I. Seven groups will have four teams, two groups will have five teams. There will be ten weeks of matches in each group.

Three teams will qualify from each group for the Knockout Stage, consisting of three one-legged knockout rounds, followed by two-legged semi-finals and final, over seven weeks.

Youth Shield

Five non-qualifiers from the Group Stage (excluding five managers who failed to pick their teams two or more times, and both fifth placed teams), plus the eleven losers from the first round, and then a further eight losers of the second round of the Youth Cup Knockout Stage, will enter the Youth Shield. The Youth Shield will run as a Knockout, consisting of three one-legged knockout rounds and semi-finals, followed by a two-legged final, over six weeks.

1st leg

It was a tight affair, as might have been predicted from the build up to the game, with underdogs Roma and their wily manager Heath Brown relying on a defensive set-up to counter City's attacking wealth.

A valuable away goal was the result in the first leg, set up the second leg nicely.

2nd leg

City's lead was reduced to nothing in the first half in Rome, and that away goal was potentially counting double if Roma could hang on.

But a valiant defensive effort was to no avail when Torres equalised early on in the second half, and that seemed to knock the wind out of the sails of Brown's youngsters, despite City finishing the match with only eight players on the pitch.

City gaffer Alex McLean was delighted with his boys' triumph, and the club's record equalling second Youth Cup

At the start of the season, someone (sorry, I forgot who) came up with the excellent idea to offer in-game prizes to the winners of the Youth Cup, and also to one manager drawn at random from all the entrants (provided they hadn't forfeited any games), to encourage participation.

The idea was to offer a 'free hit' at a new player added to the player database as a free agent - the source of many a good young prospect, and so keenly fought over that we voted to introduce a rule to make bidding on them fair for all.

So Alex at City (for winning the Youth Cup), and Jimmy at Newcastle (for winning the 'wild card' random draw).

New Free Agent Prize Rules

For the month of June, Alex and Jimmy can claim exclusive bidding rights on one new free agent - when they do so, anyone who has already bid must withdraw, and no one else must bid. Alex and Jimmy will take responsibility for monitoring bids and messaging managers to withdraw, as much as possible, and anyone who fails to abide by this will incur a transfer ban.

Claimed players must be announced by Alex and Jimmy on the newsfeed by 10 am on the day that the player is added.

In the event that both Alex and Jimmy claim the same player, Alex will get priority as Youth Cup Winner.

Any dispute will be settled by the game world owner.

Path to the final

1st Round

A late equaliser in normal time from Man of the Match Marcelo Saracchi against Nuno Bento's young Baggies' superstarlets took the match into Fictional Extra Time (FET).

Roma progressed 3-2 in the end, thanks to the arcane rule that if the sides are still level after the usual FET rules (Most possession, most shots on target, scorer of first goal), as these two were, then a deciding 'golden goal' is awarded to the team with most possession + shots on target.

2nd Round

FET was needed in the next round against Spartak, but was much more decisive this time as the hosts overran the young Russian side winning 5-2.

3rd Round

A tricky tie on paper, but Roma overcame PSG in Paris with relative ease.

Quarter Final

A superb double from Man of the Match Mert Muldur saw off a strong looking Atletico Madrid side to set up an even tougher semi-final against Benfica.

Semi Final

Heath Brown's Roma secured their final place with a 5-4 aggregate victory over a very strong and much fancied Benfica in the two legged semi-final.

An away goal in the Portuguese capital was enough to see the Italian side through, after Benfica manager ruts mistakenly sent the senior squad to contest the first leg in Rome.

Former West Bromwich Albion, Sevilla, PSV and Wolfsburg boss Heath Brown has racked up almost 200 games with Roma, and won two SMFA trophies, and also reached the final of this season's Top 100 Shield, where they were unfortunate to lose to Standard Liege.

In Heath's own words...

We were really pleased beating Nuno at my old club West Brom, that and the win over Atletico Madrid are the highlights for me.

We weren't going to enter the Youth Cup, but I loaned Svilar in from Davy at Brugge, as we didn't even have a keeper.

Top players have been Mulder at the back scoring and playing well, Saracchi at left back, Berisha has pulled the strings in midfield and Fernando up top has scored some really important goals along the way.

I seem to be good in the cups getting to two last season, winning one and losing the World Club Shield to Anderlecht, winning the SMFA Super Cup this season against Liverpool and then losing Top 100 Shield to Liege. The Roma Rollacoaster League form the same but up to 13th now.

Me and City boss Alex get on well and will share a beer afterwards not matter what the result, I hope.

Path to the final

1st Round

Man of the match Hannes Wolf led the line as the rest of the pack tore through Internacional.

2nd Round

City were given a much tougher game in Round 2, a late equaliser from Diallo sending the tie into Fictional Extra Time.

Man of the Match Ferran Torres helped ensure his team came out on top 3-2 to progress to the next round.

3rd Round

That Man of the Match Torres again - City's youngsters left it a little late to finish the job, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Quarter Final

Another walk in the park, with a stunning hat-trick for Donyell Malen, and a third in four games for Wolf, as City eased into the semi-finals.

Semi Final

Wolf scored his fourth of the tournament in a Man of the Match performance against last season's beaten finalists Dynamo Moskva.

In their first road trip of this season's Youth Cup, for the 2nd leg, City could have been expecting a tougher challenge, but went through comfortably in the end with Man of the Match Boubacar Kamara easing any nerves with an early goal.

Former Olympiacos and Internazionale boss Alex has amassed 276 games in charge of club he supports in real life. Under Alex's stewardship, City have reached an SMFA Shield final, but more significantly won the Youth Cup itself in Season 8.

Alex won the D5 title in his second season with Olympiacos, and followed up with three consecutive D2 playoff places with Internazionale.

The task at City was always for a major rebuild of the playing staff, and despite achieving the club's highest ever league position (5th in D1) in his first season, Alex saw the club relegated the season after.

Since then they have been trying to stay in D2 while developing a phenomenal youth set-up, the which is now beginning to bear fruit.

In Alex's own words...

We lucked in somewhat early doors with the sale of Ndidi to Juve. That brought us Malen. And we brought in Torres before his rise. That helped a lot.

My biggest fear was Juve, after that it was Ruts [Benfica]. Juve getting knocked out reasonably early helped my cause, but ruts' fateful error in playing his FULL squad against Roma was the game changer!

The work still had to be done on my part, and bar some minor struggles I think our progression to the final has been relatively painless! The final is a double edged sword. If I win people may so 'well, you had the stronger team'. If I lose people will doubt my ability.

Naturally I am confident. It would be great to have another Youth Cup win on my CV. But this is 2 legs. Anything can happen. I remain optimistic but cautious.

Like previous seasons their will be a group stage followed by 2 knock out competitions which will be determined by performance in the group stage. 7 groups of 6 teams = 42 teams - 32 teams will progress - 10 will be eliminated.
