The long season has come to an end and there have been mixed reactions when we look back at the just-ended season. There have been managerial changes, several transfer ins, and outs, missing the playoff spot by the hairline, and many more. Let's review our performances in the season and lessons learned and discuss how we'll be moving forward in future.

Bilbao had a forgettable preseason – 1W-1D-3L in 5 games. Despite the poor results, we had a decent start to the new season – 3 wins and losses each in the first six in all competitions. Then the reality kicked in, we just won 4 league games in the next 14 games. But we had a decent run in Cup tournament qualifying for Quarters seeing off AZ Alkmaar, CSKA Moskov, Saint Etienne, and Malaga. During the mid-season, a new opportunity knocked on the door, and Mr. Feargal left the post for Sevilla.

Bilbao was already written off by the time I’ve taken over. When I joined, the club was in 15th position after 20 games. No offense to the previous manager, but the team was in a poor state and morale was down completely. My initial reaction was to stop the leakage – meaning, stop the defeats and play slow ball and get a crucial 1 point each game. We drew the first 6 league games and lost the next 2 and also, knocked out of the cup tournament along the way. Fans were losing patience and the Board was already taking interviews to replace me post-season. But our hard work in the training ground paid off.

The atmosphere slowly started to build up and new signings Kadioglu, Biancone, and Bellegarde, settled well quickly and helped us on our rollercoaster ride. We won 5 games, drew four, and racked up an impressive 19 from possible 33 points. Although seems insignificant, we suddenly moved from bottom crawlers to Top 6 contenders. A win in the final game would have scripted our story differently and it would have been a fairy tale of our own. Nevertheless, we are happy with how the team is shaping up and we’ll continue to fight with everything we have. The team-building process is going well at the moment with deadwood almost cleared off our pitch while the academy continues to grow. We’re hoping that our young guns will continue to develop and one day graduate into our team. Due to a lot of changes in tactics and with two managers of different ideologies, we hadn’t got any specific player(s) as star performers (rather it’s a team effort) and so we’re canceling our end-of-the-season awards for this season.

We’ll soon release the official 22 men's squad for the upcoming season and even before it’s revealed, the pundits are already writing us down and bookies bet that the over-performing Athletic club will struggle in the upcoming season. We’ll answer them with our performances on the pitch next season.

Athletic Club appoint Tharanidharan as their new manager

Athletic Club has appointed Mr. Tharanidharan as their new manager during mid season as their former manager Feargal Hickey was poached by Division 3 club - Sevilla. After a decent spell at Top 120, he along with the 2 more managers got promoted to Top 100 and Athletic was quick enough to get their hands on the best manager of the lot. It is said that the Indian coach prefers slow ball 4-2-3-1B just like millions of managers in Soccer Manager Worlds but it isn't what tempted the Spanish club to go after him. His loyalty to the club, long term vision, down to earth personality, easily approachable by staffs and players and good rapport with fellow managers of the league were some of the qualities inspired the Board. Since it's an mid season appointment, nothing much expected of him. The Board gave him the target of finishing in top half of the table and go as far as possible in Cup games. No pressure. Below is the first interview of the new coach.

“I'm excited and I really look forward to doing this job, at this club with massive history, and we want to restore it where it belongs. First of all, we want to make the fans proud. Second, of course we are in this moment, the current situation is obviously not that good. It’s a big challenge. I want to build and construct a team who are battling for each other, who are unified and who will get results. They have to co-operate together and they have to give every day their best. And I would say, for me, good is not good enough. We have to do better. I know many criticize us for using 4-2-3-1B slow ball but if something is tested to be working consistently why would I want to change and complicate things. You can't be different for just to be different. At the end of the day, 3 points is all that matters and we'll fight to get it every single game. I'll conclude by saying that I’m happy that I am here and I will give my best and I hope and I expect that I can make them proud again, that we restore the club where they belong. I will give my best and I will take the decisions necessary to get there. "

Club Statement : "In our conversations with Tharani leading up to this appointment, we were deeply impressed with his long-term vision for returning Athletic Club to the level we want to be competing at, and his drive and determination to achieve that. We wish him the best of luck in his new adventure of his career."

Athletic Club ... the resurgence ... 19 matches in, 19 matches to go

What has happened to Bilbao ? This time last season, languishing towards the bottom of Division 2, struggling each and every week, and ultimately relegated with several matches left before the end of the season.

This season, after a second chance from the new Chinese owners, reinvigorated from a post season trip to Australia and a change in strategy, manager Mike T has Los Leones sitting in 2nd place in Division 3, three points behind leaders Lazio.

In an attempt to break from the pack, a decision to move from the 4-2-3-1 formation that has been recognized as the new 3-5-2 and used by many teams successfully and unsuccessfully (see Bilbao last season) was made, and the coaching staff transitioned the team to a 4-4-1-1 formation, pushing the DM-CM-AM forward to support the attack where-ever possible. A direct passing approach, and compact defending once the ball moved into their own half has Bilbao close to promotion again. Knowing that squad depth and starting 11 caliber was approximately mid-table in Division 3, a tight marking and counter attacking style was drummed into the squad, which has so far yielded the right results.

Not afraid to chase the game and open up a little has also brought some notable saves and wins, notably a draw in the opening season fixture vs Dynamo Kyiv, and wins against AZ Alkmaar, Hamburg and in their last outing, a late winner against PSV. Knowing that his squad is not built to win a possession battle, and playing a counter attacking style has meant that Bilbao average 48% of the ball at the San Mames, and 45% on the road. Interestingly the counter style has still yielded the same shots and shots on target both home and away 10S / 4oT at home, and 11S / 4oT away from the San Mames. Opponents, despite having more possession are only averaging similar numbers of shots and shots on target.

What has made the biggest difference this year has been the form of Fraser Forster between the sticks. Offered in a few deals during the summer after a forgettable campaign in Division 2 last season, he has turned it on and is having his best year statistically by far. Over the first 19 matches, he has kept 10 clean sheets, 5 at home and 5 on the road, and has average a 7.2 match rating, both home and away. With his confidence having returned, the defense has also responded in kind and have the second best goals conceded rate at 16, with only Lazio sitting above Bilbao at the head of the table with 15 conceded.

Having the left and right sided outside midfielders with defensive qualities has been a key this season in limiting the the goals and cutting off the outside channels that teams often exploited the previous season. The signing of Delaney in the off season partnering with Inan in the middle of the park has helped the settle the midfield and allowed club captain Camacho to anchor the center of the defense, as a CB with ball playing skills, with many a push forward set up with his initial ball.

Also noticeable has been the crowd returning to watch their team. After averaging ~35000 in their first four home games, yielding 3 wins and a loss, the next 6 matches have averaged ~42750 fans, a 20% increase through the turnstiles, with visit on leaders Lazio topping out at 44036 fans. An 11 match unbeaten run in the first 19 matches for good measure had many a die hard fan in tears … not having seen this sort of form for many many years.

Goal scoring has not been the focus this season, a haul of 25 goals from 19 matches places Bilbao mid pack. All but one of these goals was created from an assist which has in part validated the change to the formation and playing style, with nine players having created 2 or more assists. The goals hitting the back of the net also has a wide distribution, with seven players having scored two or more, Sandro Ramirez and Gio Dos Santos scoring 5 each. This spread of assists and goals has not made Bilbao the one dimensional team it was last season. A next man up mentality, selected for their ability to follow instructions and play the position while not sacrificing the balance of the team has also contributed, with youngsters getting their chance to start … Marcelo Saracchi scoring a goal against PSV in the last outing from a corner, starting his first match in place of the injured Ledley on the left side of midfield.

What do the remaining 19 matches hold ? The chairman and board still expect a Top 10 finish, and have not yet been putting any pressure on Mike T and the squad, but the fans are excited, and if the Rojiblanco’s continue with their form shown from the first half of the season, dreams of another season in Division 2 against some of the bigger clubs in the T100 could be on offer ….

I can see why Mike T lives in a state of perpetual confusion ...

After confirming that my several convictions for youthful indiscretions in Mallorca and Ibiza would not preclude me getting a visa I agreed and had my editor book the tickets. Having never been to Australia I was not sure what to expect. The closest I came to an Australian was a 19yr old gymnast at the World Championships back in 1986 who snuck me into her athlete’s accommodation during the post event party and promptly passed out from excessive alcohol consumption. I was told not to show fear to anything with eight legs because they are all deadly (no point worrying about it I was told).

Upon landing in Australia at Hobart in Tasmania, I was greeted by the assistants who took me to the tour bus that Mike had procured for the tour. “One rule” he said “only one question per stop”, and with that we climbed aboard and set off for our first destination

The story begins; Paradise - Tasmania

Mike T took over from the accomplished Gareth Crisp in May 2016 a little less than half way through Season 5. Comfortably nestled mid-table in Division 3 and with a competitive squad, with the Los Leones fans mourning the departure of Crisp, he made a low key start primarily aimed at holding the line and not losing ground in the Division 3 promotion race. The squad was left in excellent shape by the outgoing Crisp, who had taken on the challenge at Sampdoria, also in Division 3. Whilst this could have riled the fans their tempers fizzled as Mike T took them on 12 match league unbeaten run pushing them into the playoff picture.

The tour begins; We had a solid first eleven and three or four quality subs, but we dropped off after that. We were also an aging team that would likely lose a step in the next season. I had some discussions with our captain Camacho during the offseason where he suggested we get a little more aggressive and chase some transfer targets, and even offered a few names. I knew he hadn’t come up with these by himself and had likely discussed them with our leadership group (Forster, Sagna, Rico and Inan) who knew well who we would be facing in the upcoming season. In the end I didn’t push hard enough and we didn’t bring in enough new talent, and it probably caused a small fissure between me and the squad”.

We drove back to Devonport to take the ferry over to Melbourne and the continuation of our tour. The twins were proving to be accommodating hostesses and Mike T a generous host and honest interview subject. As I gathered my thoughts I wondered if the promotion had come too soon during his tenure at San Mames? Were the fans expecting too much from their team in Division 2? Did Mike T underestimate what was needed to be successful in Division 2? I think we know the answer to the last question.

Roll on Victoria;
